Quite honestly, though, Kraj prefers you to spread the counters around and not to transfrom this new card. At least, not until you’ve got a few dozen counters on Kraj, so you can swing for the win. Good thing that isn’t hard to do. One Kraj has at least 3 +1/+1 counters on him (and Gyre Sage and Gilder Bairn have at least one each), he goes arbitrarily large with counters and mana.
Tumblr media
Otherwise, in a pinch, Solarion will speed up Kraj while you’re waiting for the Gilder Bairn. Otherwise Animation/Decoction/Fabrication Module help you to increase the number of +1/+1 counters (and give you a few targets for the spare +1/+1 counters from Hadana’s Climb), but it will cost one mana for each cycle of them.

atraxa’s mtg fortune of the day
(the rules are simple: i draw 3 cards from my atraxa commander deck, since that’s the only large pool of cards i have conveniently assembled at the moment, and improvise a fortune.)

Hadana's Climb depicts a scene I don't remember reading during Ixalan's story? Am I wrong here?
The Art was used for Kumena’s ascent but no, a lot of RIX cards depict scenes that don’t happen in the story. That’s not uncommon, there is frequently artwork that depict things that don’t appear in the story itself.

My Animar Decklist
A couple people have asked me about my decklist due to my tumblr handle. This is a deck I’ve been building for roughly 5 years and have gotten it to a build I enjoy playing that I feel is both casual and fun. There are many times I have made all of my opponents scoop and times where it just doesn’t work.
Before you try to recommend changes to my deck, consider:
Yes, I know there  are better cards
Yes, I know there  are ways to make infinite combos
You’re not my mom

Rivals of Ixalan draft #1: U/W Ascend / Flying. I think this deck will be good.
Round 1: Win against U/G Merfolk. Flyers are really good. The turn I won, my opponent cast Blinding Fog, which only prevents damage done to creatures. My unblockable team didn’t care about that.
Round 2: Win against Grixis Pirates. They still couldn’t keep up with my flyers and unblockable creatures.
Round 3: Loss against W/U/B/G Hadana’s Climb + Air Elemental. I think I would have won had I left back a flying blocker. They hit me down from 17 to -1 in one attack.
Round 4: Loss against Abzan Vampires. They just had so much removal it hurt.
Round 5: Win against U/R flying Pirate tempo. That was a super close one. They kept attacking with only one creature, so I had to wait til I was at 2 life to used Settle the Wreckage, then pump my team with Encampment Keeper on the crackback.
Round 6: Win against U/G Merfolk. T1 Unblockable creature + T2 Curious Obsession puts in a lot of work. Then I gave it lifelink.
Round 7: Win against W/?. Their first 4 turns all they did was play Plains and pass. I went 1 drop, 2 drop, 3 drop, 4 drop. They scooped.
Round 8: Loss against W/B Vampirates. I can’t believe I lost because my opponent had Elaborate Firecannon.

My Simic deck in Arena is mostly up to form now; I might actually bother spending rare wildcards on more proper lands next. Dunno how set I am on only having defensive countering; It used to have Spell Pierce, Negate, Callous Dismissal, and Blink of an Eye at various points. Obviously they’re sideboard material, but Arena defaults to a lot of bo1 matches.

Legendary Creature — Dragon
Flying
Whenever Treva, the Renewer deals combat damage to a player, you may pay {2}{W}. If you do, choose a color, then you gain 1 life for each permanent of that color.

The Future
Hadana's Climb
{1}{G}{U}
Legendary Enchantment
At the beginning of combat on your turn, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control. Then if that creature has three or more +1/+1 counters on it, transform Hadana's Climb.

Jund Energy in Standard - MtG Deck Tech
So the Store Championships were over the weekend and while I didn’t win I did manage to top 8. To be exact I finished sixth. The deck I used for the championship, and for the last week for standard showdown and FNM to kind of test and perfect it is a different build on energy that I don’t think anyone else is running. Maybe there is a reason for that. My deck has all the basics of the very popular, very powerful, Sultai Energy decks. The biggest differences are I substituted the blue for red making it Jund instead of Sultai. All the key cards are the same. I also run Winding Constrictor, Walking Ballista, Rishkar, Verdurous Gearhulk, etc, but instead of splashing blue for Hadana’s Climb and a little bit of counter magic I splashed red for Harnessed Lightning, Glorybringer and Ahn-Crop Crasher. I think my build is slightly a little more aggro than the Sultai build but both are fun and Jund fits my style of play more than Sultai and counter magic does. I am always usually a black and/or green player and my preferred three color combo is Jund so this is right in my comfort zone as a player and a brewer. My deck also varies a little more from the Sultai list in the fact that I do not have Servant of the Conduit in my deck. I tested with it in the deck at first and after several matches I found myself not using it’s abilities and opted to replace it with something a little more utility in my deck. I know the Servants offered energy just for hitting the battlefield but in my experience when the deck is working as it should coming across energy is not a struggle. I replaced Servant of the Conduit with Gonti, Lord of Luxury. While, it does not provide energy it allows me to look at the top four cards of my opponents deck and choose a card to exile and I can cast that card at any time or just hold on to it and take a card away from an opponent. This is especially favorable against control and approach decks. Well I’ve talked enough here’s the list.
4 Ahn-Crop Crasher
3 Walking Ballista
4 Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
4 Bristling Hydra
4 Glorybringer
4 Winding Constrictor
2 Gonti, Lord of Luxury
2 Rishkar, Padeem Renegade
2 Verdurous Gearhulk
3 Harnessed Lightning
2 Fatal Push
2 Vraska’s Contempt
1 Lifecrafter’s Bestiary
4 Aether Hub
4 Rootbound Crag
2 Dragonskull Summit
3 Blooming Marsh
5 Forest
3 Mountain
2 Swamp
Sideboard:
3 Duress
2 Silent Gravestone
2 Fatal Push
3 Appetite for the Unnatural
3 Ixalan’s Binding
2 Blossoming Defense
My sideboard plan may seem a little odd being that one of the cards is white and white doesn’t fit in the Jund color scheme. Well, with Aether Hub down as long as I have an energy it can tap for whatever color mana I choose so I’m really not concerned with not having an actual white mana. I put Ixalan’s Binding in because it is a great way to deal with the aggro matchup and Hazoret or a token matchup and exile their combo pieces. Or maybe you can resolve it against a Dimir deck and bind a Scarab God or a Torrential Gearhulk. I chose Appetite for the Unnatural over Naturalize because if a token deck or the aura deck sideboards in Lost Legacy assuming I have some enchantment hate to side in everyone assumes it is Naturalize. I was either going to go either Appetite for the Unnatural or Thrashing Brontodon. While Thrashing Bronotodon is attached to a 3/4 body, Appetite cost one less mana and gains you a little bit of life. In the main deck I am running one copy of Lifecrafter’s Bestiary as kind of a fun-of card but if it manages to land on the battlefield it is a good way to filter through your deck and search for the cards you’re looking for at the time. Well that was my deck for the store championship and probably for FNM and standard showdown until I can get my hands on some Dominaria cards or get bored and test something else. I’m always brewing new decks. Until next time, gl, hf.

So last week Grandprix Memphis happened and the top eight decks where actually really refreshing to see. In fact, in the top eight decks there wasn’t a single mono red aggro. From this Grandprix we can see that the standard meta is at a point where there are tons of decks with potential to take the top spot. All of these decks can be found on Mtggoldfish.
At the top tables the most represented deck was Grixis Energy. With the ban of Rogue Refiner and Attune with Aether we have seen temur energy ditch green in favor of black. This wasn’t out of no where however, leading up to the bans we saw black get splashed into the deck to add the ever popular Scarab God. Now that energy has fully shifted to black, it can make use of powerful cards like Glint-Sleeve Siphoner for card draw and the very powerful removal card Vraska's Contempt. The really cool thing about Grixis Energy is that it is a very diverse deck. You can Build it more aggro based with cards like Gonti, Lord of Luxury and Rekindling Phoenix or, as some player opted, take a page from Grixis Control and play Torrential Gearhulk with more instant cards to counter your opponents plays. It is an understatement to say Grixis is a very diverse deck this format and even after the bans, Energy decks are still a live.
The next most popular deck was Blue-Black Control. Blue-Black is a powerful combination making use of powerful blue counter spells like Essence Scatter and Disallow as well as, powerful black removal like Fatal Push, Vraska's Contempt, and a new Ixalan card, Moment of Craving. In short this deck is all about taking care of problems on the board if not stoping the play before it happens completely. In this deck there is also two very powerful combo cards The Scarab God and Torrential Gearhulk. Gearhulk can get instants back from the graveyard for free and The Scarab God can make 4/4 black zombie tokens from anyones graveyard. But what is really cool is if Gearhulk gets put into the graveyard you can use The Scarab God to make a token of him and get an instant from the graveyard! This can be a powerful move that sets your opponent back and leaving your board with two very strong monsters. Blue-Black Control is the perfect deck for The Scarab God and demonstrates how powerful of a card it is.
Mardu Vehicles is a deck that it seems will never die. Once at the top of the Standard deck food chain, it was though to have fallen from grace. However, many players have demonstrated that no matter what, big beefy vehicles flying at the opponents life will always be good. Heart of Kiran will always be a fantastic card with the ability to be crewed by planeswalkers. This paired with Chandra, Torch of Defiance you can essentially draw a card to play or burn your opponent or ramp adding two red mana to your mana pool and then send a 4/4 in for the kill. Mardu Vehicles have been a persistent deck since Kaladesh block and it, like it’s brother energy, has shown how much of an impact Kaladesh has made on the current meta.
During Grandprix Memphis we saw a “new” deck pop up, Sultai Constrictor. This for the most part is the same Green-Black Constrictor deck that has been seen over the last few months. The deck aims to use Winding Constrictor to and additional counters to permanents that are in the process of gaining one or more. However, this deck splashes blue to make use of a “merfolk” card, Hadana's Climb. At the start of combat, you can place a +1/+1 counter on a creature. This increases the amount of counters every turn significantly and really beefs up your monsters quickly. Once one of your creatures has three or more counters on it, it transforms into Winged Temple of Orazca, which can give creatures flying and double its power. Naturally with so many counters going on creatures this makes it transformation really easy and a fast way to close out the game. This is a really cool take on constrictor decks and makes me wonder what is the next step for this deck. There is a lot of blue merfolk cards that could make there way into the deck. Herald of Secret Streams seems like it could fit making all creatures with counters on them unblock-able. It’s possible and I think it would be pretty cool if we saw a hybrid Merfolk-Constrictor deck come out of this. But only time will tell.
Taking first place was the big and stompy Red-Green Monsters. In this deck we see cost efficient creatures like Earthshaker Khenra, Resilient Khenra, and the very popular Jadelight Ranger come down in the early game to deal quick damage to the opponent. Later in the game powerful creatures hit the battlefield like Glorybringer and Rekindling Phoenix to close out the game. We also see a large power increase package like Rhonas the Indomitable, Hashep Oasis and the eternalized Resilient Khenra to boost the already quit strong monsters power. I think I speak for a lot of players when I say that we were really hoping for a dinosaur deck in standard and though not pure dinos, this deck is the closet I think well get. Out of all the top eight decks I honestly find this the most nostalgic. When I was a kid my favorite kind of decks were big stompy creatures that dealt a lot of damage to the opponent and it’s really cool to see that play style still thriving.
In closing I think that standard is in a very good place. We still see energy has a strong hold on the meta but, theres so many decks that all have a shot at the top spot. We see the standard meta game shifting all the time and personally thats what I like to see. I like formats where with the research and hard work you can make a deck and take it to the top and I think that should be Wizard’s of the Coast goal when making sets. But what do you all think? Is standard healthy or is energy still to strong? And out of the top eight decks which do you want to try out? Feel free to comment and let me know! I’ll talk to you all soon! Have a good morning/afternoon/night!
